For many Minnesotans, spring is a time of renewal, and at the Minnesota Zoo, spring is the time for animal babies. The Minnesota Zoo welcomed a male Bactrian camel calf on March 12. He is now on exhibit on the Northern Trail.
A birth weight of 120 pounds, the nameless calf was kept in private as his mother tended to him to ensure he was healthy. Camels typically gain two pounds per day, and the calf will reach adult size (1600-1800 pounds, eight feet tall) in three to four years.
