A man is facing a string of charges after he allegedly tried to steal scrap metal from a property owned by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Authorities say Patrick Jivery was caught near Loop 202 and Country Club Drive with an oxygen and propane tanks -- with a cutting torch attached.

Police say Jivery admitted that he was about to cut down a steel retention wall so he and a buddy could sell it for scrap and split the proceeds.

According to the police report, officers found fresh dirt around the support wall -- which holds back trash from an old dump site when the river rises.

It's estimated that the wall, which is 100 feet long, would have been worth $1,500.

The suspect told officers he had been there the day before and cut pieces out of some cement truck barrels.  When asked if he knew it was wrong to be on the property, he said yes, but wasn't sure he would get in trouble.

Jivery was charged with criminal damage, theft and criminal trespassing.
