ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) -

Investigators searched the home of a suburban Detroit mayor and seized several items as part of an ongoing investigation into public corruption, state police said Tuesday.

The search began Monday night at the home of Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert. Police said Lambert was cooperative and was allowed to leave his home after an interview with investigators. No request for charges in the case would come for at least a month, police said.

The case involves city officials and stretches back several years, Lt. Michael Shaw said. Specifics about what police were looking for have not been released.

"Numerous items were seized from the home and are being processed at this time," police said in a statement. Shaw said evidence would be reviewed and could be sent to a lab for processing.

Lambert did not appear to have shown up at City Hall Tuesday morning. FOX 2 left a message at his office seeking comment. Officials say a statement may be released Tuesday afternoon.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office, which could be asked to review the current case for possible charges, said it had no comment Tuesday. A message seeking comment was sent Tuesday to a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Detroit.

The city of Romulus drew attention in 2011 after a former police chief and five detectives were charged in an alleged scheme that used drug forfeiture money to pay for prostitutes, alcohol and marijuana, and to buy a tanning salon later operated by the then-chief's wife.

Lambert was never linked to that case. Shaw said the latest investigation has nothing to do with the 2011 scandal.
