Spring In The Air, Snow On The Ground

Posted: Updated:
HAMMONTON, N.J. -

Spring is in the air but snow was falling from the sky.

"I hate it. It's very ugly" said Dawn Singleton of Marlton, N.J.

That's the response most people had when they woke up this morning to a coating of snow on the ground. The early spring storm had many wondering when winter will just go away.

"Can you say four letter words on FOX 29? asked Chris Westfall of Berlin, N.J. (No you cannot by the way)

Snow was falling for most of Monday across the Delaware Valley. Chester County has the most accumulation with some spots receiving more than 4 inches.

Hammonton, N.J. recorded a little more than 3 inches. Most of the accumulation was on the grass. The snow fall comes when most are planting spring gardens or shopping for Easter flowers.

"(Customers) want to come in for tulips and lilies and all the stuff that blooms but nothing is going to bloom with the snow so people aren't really in the mood" said Samantha Perry of Ron's Gardens in Hammonton.

NJDOT snow plows and salt trucks sat idle most of the day on area roadways since most of the snow melted as it hit the warmer ground. Even the grocery stores, notorious for being packed with shoppers during a snowstorm, were unusually quiet.

"It's my normal weekly shopping. I'm not stocking up on anything it's not going to do anything" said Lee Gazzara of Hammonton.

But some people wanted more snow, including students on spring break at Strath Haven High School in Nether Providence Township. By mid-morning, dozens of people flocked to the popular sledding hill to catch what could be the last snowfall of the season.

The Perry Family from Folsom, N.J. spent the whole day riding their toboggan attached to a 4- wheel ATV for some snow day fun.

"We've been looking for the snow all year for the past two years and we finally got some today," said Paul Perry.

And if this is the last snow fall of the winter--that's just fine with most.

"It just seems like it's dragging out from a long winter. Waiting for some nice weather and sit on the beach," said Westfall.

Just remember there's only 60 days until Memorial Day weekend.
