Driver Strikes Police Car On Bridge To Report Kidnapping

Posted: Updated:
CAPE MAY COUNTY, N.J. -

A 45-year old man has been arrested in connection with a bizarre kidnapping scheme after his alleged victim crashed into a police car on the Ben Franklin Bridge, authorities say.

The incident unfolded Friday, when Floribert Nava and his underage victim struck a marked police vehicle that was sitting idle on the shoulder of the Ben Franklin Parkway, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.

Police say the victim, who was driving the vehicle with Nava as a passenger, jumped out of the car and told an officer that Nava kidnapped her from Wildwood earlier in the day.

She also told police Nava had a gun, and he arrested at that time.

Investigators say they learned that Nava and the victim were in a dispute over the adoption of a recently-born child. Earlier in the day, Nava met the victim in Wildwood, pulled a handgun and forced the victim to drive to Philadelphia and take him to the location of the adopted parents.  Nava apparently said he still wanted the child.

While driving across the bridge, the victim intentionally struck the police vehicle, prosecutors say. The officer was not injured.  During the arrest, the officer located an "air soft" handgun, duct tape, trash bags and latex gloves in the car.

Both the victim and Nava were interviewed.

As a result, Nava has been charged with kidnapping, terroristic threats, and possession of a weapon.

He is currently being held at the Cape May County Correctional Facility on $400,000 bail.
