Tuition 101: How To Afford College

Posted: Updated:

The cost of a 4-year college education is on the rise, while the income of many American families is on the decline.

So, what if we told you that your child may be able to receive a free college education!?  Is this too good to be true?

We gave financial expert Dan Roccato some homework on this very subject and, as always, Dan completed the assignment.  This morning, Dan was on Good day to talk about how parents can afford to send their children to school and avoid plummeting into debt.

Some states for you to consider:

1. Average Pa state college: $22,261

2. Average Pa Private college: $43,289

3. College costs has increased 600% since 1980, while family income has increased by only 200%.

So, what can you do? here are some amazing tips for parents (and students)

1. Some local schools (Princeton, UPENN) offer if free tuition if your family income is below a certain amount.

2. In NJ, if you have a 3.5 average or above coming out of HS, you can qualify for the STARS free tuition program to a community college.

3. Once your child zeroes in on the college(s) of their choice, go straight to that school's admissions office and ask about any special scholarships or programs they offer to incoming/prospective students.

4. Visit www.scholarships.com this site has a lost of scholarships available across the country.

5. Be flexible!  Sometimes, the best offers lie outside of your geographic location.

6. Choose your major wisely.

7.  Consider a private school.  Sometimes, the more expensive private universities have major endowments that they use to recruit and retain students that otherwise might not be able to afford to go.

 8.  Do the legwork.  Roll up your sleeves and make it happen!  It is worth it when you are sitting there on graduation day and that tuition is paid in full!

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
