Gophers guard Andre Hollins helped secure a victory over UCLA on Friday night, but now No. 11 Minnesota will fight for a spot in the Sweet 16 against the No. 3 Florida Gators on Sunday.
Hollins shot 5-for-8 from three-point land and ended up with 28 points on the night against the Bruins. Senior forward Trevor Mbakwe grabbed 12 boards and the Gophers went on to rout UCLA 83-63 on 50.8% and 31.7% shooting, respectively.
Sunday night presents a Florida team (27-7) coming off a 79-47 takeover of Northwestern State, with four players scoring in double figures. The Gators will be playing for their third straight Sweet 16 appearance, while the Gophers (21-12) haven't had a tournament victory since 1997 where they lost to Kentucky in the National Semifinal. They've since appeared in 1999, 2005, 2009 and 2010, but lost each in the first round.
Tubby Smith and Gators head coach Billy Donovan have met 26 previous times, their battle dating back to the late 1990s when Smith was at Georgia and Kentucky and Donovan started coaching in Florida. Smith holds the edge at 16-10.
Florida will be Minnesota's 12th game against a team ranked in the AP Top 25 at the time of the game. The Gophers are 6-5 in those games.
Tipoff is set for 5:10 p.m. CT on TNT.
