PHILADELPHIA -

A 73-year-old man died Tuesday when police say his car flipped over and entered the Schuylkill River.

The accident happened along the inbound lanes of Kelly Drive around 12:30 p.m. in the area of Boathouse Row.

It's not yet clear what caused the man's car to leave the road. Police have not released the name of the victim.

Two Good Samaritans tried to jump in and rescue the man, but were not able to get to him. FOX 29 has learned one of the Good Samaritans, a 48-year-old man, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is in fair condition.

The stretch of Kelly Drive where the car left the road is known for numerous crashes over the years.
