The two time defending state champion Hopkins Royals didn't put their best effort on the Target Center court Wednesday morning. Their effort was enough however as they led from wire to wire and advanced to the semi-final round with a 77-58 victory over St. Michael Albertville.
"Ugly," said head coach Brian Cosgriff. "But at this point, it's win and advance."
Nia Coffey led the way for the Royals with 22 points and 9 rebounds. It was the defensive effort that gave the Knights fits. The Royals held the Knights to 28 percent shooting in the game. Both teams turned the ball over 27 times.
"I think we were a little too amped up," Cosgriff said.
Including their back-to-back championship games, the Royals have outscored their opponents by an average of 20 points. They will face the winner of St. Paul Central and Osseo tomorrow night in the first semi-final game at 6PM.
