Minn. officials explain TurboTax troubles, possible return delays

On Monday, officials from the Minnesota Department of Revenue released more information on why they issued a warning last week urging residents to avoid using TurboTax.
Officials explained that Intuit discovered problems with some of its tax return software programs, including TurboTax, that could delay tax refunds or make them inaccurate.
Intuit said the problems were identified by Minnesota revenue officials are confined to Minnesota only, but the umbrella company has several other programs used by accountants and CPAs. That means it's not just the do-it-yourself tax filers who are impacted.
Intuit employees spent the weekend trying to fix the problems, but while the company doesn't believe any more issues will pop up, the software still has not gotten the government's green light.
The problems affect the part of the 2012 Minnesota income tax returns where taxpayers decide whether or not to donate $5 to a political party. A spokeswoman for Intuit said the problems can cause taxpayers' intentions to be miscommunicated to the state.
The Department of Revenue is relying on Intuit to provide them with a list of taxpayers or preparers affected, and the state hopes to fix the problems on electronic filings; however, those who mailed their returns will have to start over.
Anyone who has already filed a tax return with TurboTax or other Intuit software should call the company at 1-866-888-4609. The Department of Revenue has a list of safe programs to use listed on its website.
