ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (KMSP) -

Friends of Kira Trevino combed dozens of miles over the weekend in search of clues in that could help police solve what they believe is a murder case.

Kira Trevino hasn't been seen since Feb. 21, when she left work at the Mall of America. Her husband, 39-year-old Jeffrey Trevino, was later arrested and remains in Ramsey County Jail on murder charges.

Yet, police are still describing Kira Trevino's disappearance as a missing person's case although they do say she is presumed dead. Though they found evidence of a violent crime in the couple's St. Paul home, they still have not located a body.

Trevino's friends began looking for clues by searching the area around the Spring Lake Park Reserve area in Rosemount; however, no break in the case has yet been uncovered.

The search on Saturday focused on a 100-mile area in the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, about 20 minutes from the Trevinos' home.

Kira Trevino's family members did not take part in the search, and organizers say that is simply because they are dealing with so much right now. Other members of the community -- including the Trevinos' neighbors -- helped, saying they want to find their friend because neither can believe Jeffrey Trevino would be capable of murder.

"How could this happen to somebody that we knew?" asked Diana Fernandez. "She would never harm a fly. I'm in shock. I just want her to be found -- some closure."

Jeffrey Trevino was arrested after a search warrant was executed at the couple's home, revealing large quantities of blood and showing evidence of a clean-up effort. Police say blood was also found in the trunk of Kira Trevino's car, which was found parked in a remote part of a parking ramp at the Mall of America.

Police believe Jeffery Trevino killed his wife and dumped her body sometime before 9 a.m. on Feb. 22. Surveillance video from a gas station near the couple's home shows a man fill the gas tank of Kira Trevino's car and then drive toward Interstate 35 E.

"My assumption is down by the river," said Matt Evans. "Jeff liked to fish, so if he came out here to do fishing, that'd be my first guess. He'd know the trails to get down to the water."

Evans and Fernandez lived next door to the Trevinos when they lived in Mound a few years ago, and though they say they have trouble believing the happy couple they knew could have come to murder, they say they won't stop searching until Kira Trevino is found.

"I'll stay out here all night if we have to," Fernandez said. "There's got to be something."

The volunteer-driven search continued on Sunday at the Lilydale Brickyard in St. Paul. Searchers were set to get going at noon.
