Girls tell police man chased them during scavenger hunt

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

A subdivision in Cherokee County is on alert after investigators say a possible predator chased after a group of young girls at a birthday party.

The girls came to Mark Hutton's house off of Bells Ferry Road last Saturday to celebrate his daughter's 11th birthday. The party included a scavenger hunt, which led a group of four girls to a playground where they noticed a car slowly driving toward them.

"The guy actually cornered them at the playground with the car. And then he got out of the car and motioned towards the girls," Hutton said.

According to investigators, the man shouted and lunged at the girls, who were able to run off into the woods.

"When you're bold enough to step out of that vehicle to make an attempt to actually step out and possibly run or grab a child, it's very serious. That's when something bad can really happen," said Hutton.

And, according to Hutton, before the girls made it safely back home, his wife saw the same suspicious car driving up and down the street, apparently still looking for the 10 and 11-year-olds.

Witnesses said that the car was a silver four door, possibly an Audi or Jetta, with tinted windows and a few dents. The last three numbers on the Georgia license plate were "697".

"Detectives are reviewing sex offenders that live in that area. Their vehicles, their tag numbers, their descriptions, the types of cars they drive; just to make sure that it's not one of them," said Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Until the guy is found, Hutton said that he is not letting his children outside alone.

"Please just, you know, hug your kids a little tighter at night. And be watching and if you see anything suspicious, call it in," Hutton said.

Police canvassed the area but could not find the man nor his vehicle. They say they have been conducting interviews, and comparing the suspect's description with sex offenders who reside in the area.

Authorities said that there is a lot of activity in the newly-built subdivision, so the man might not be from the area.

If anyone has any information on the incident, they are urged to call the Cherokee County's Sheriff's Office at (678) 493-4100 or 911.
