Los Angeles, CA -

Grape Street and 115th in Watts. Police in uniform. Others in suits. All trying to sort out this tragedy.

The way police describe it around 2:30 they got a call of domestic abuse on Grape St. When they arrived they walked up to a red pickup truck in the middle of the street. Inside a man dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

They see another man in front of the green house nearby who fires on the officers. Officers fire back. The man goes into the house and over the next 45 minutes there are random shots fired at police. SWAT moves in. Two of the 3 kids inside walk up to the door and say their mom and dad have been shot.

Police go in and see the suspect dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. His wife in grave condition. She was taken to a hospital. An officer grabs the one year old and takes him to an awaiting ambulance. The other two children, a three year old daughter and 8 year old son were taken to Southeast Station. LAPD Commander Andy Smith says they'll be cared for by the Department of Children and Family Services.

The investigation continues.

(CNS) A gunman who fired shots at officers while barricaded inside a house in Watts was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound this morning and investigators believe he also gravely wounded a woman believed to be his wife before turning the gun on himself,
police said.

A man inside a pickup truck outside the house on Grape Street just north of Imperial Highway was also shot dead, police said, but they have not confirmed he was killed by shots fired by the suspect.

Three young children who had been inside the house were not harmed, Cmdr. Bob Green of the Los Angeles Police Department's Southeast Station told reporters.

The standoff began around 3 a.m. when officers responded to a call of shots fired, found the man shot in the pickup truck and encountered the gunman, who ran into the house and started shooting from inside, said Officer Bruce Borihanh of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.

SWAT officers entered the home around 5 a.m. and found the gunman dead and the woman wounded, he said.

A news photographer at the scene reported seeing one child who appeared to be about six carrying an even younger child out of the home.

A 1-year-old was found inside the house unharmed, Green said.
