NYC parks to hire more safety patrol officers

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City plans to hire 81 new enforcement patrol officers for its parks

The new hires will double the patrol team at the parks department.

According to the Wall Street Journal, they're part of an overall plan to hire 414 workers to perform a range of tasks, from maintaining playground equipment to pruning trees.

The safety officers are unarmed. They're responsible for improving safety by enforcing park rules and protecting park assets.

Crime increased in the parks last year by 7 percent over the previous year.
