MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

After openly grieving for nearly a week, 17-year-old Anthony Mitchell is now charged with murdering Anna Hurd, his 16-year-old girlfriend of less than a year.

Before his arrest, Mitchell told FOX 9 he was the one who found Hurd's body and gave police a detailed description of who they should look for. However, according to the charges, investigators say Mitchell changed that story several times.

His mother was the one who called 911 after Anthony came home around 2 a.m. that night, admitting he and Anna had a fight. He left again a couple of hours later and returned hysterical and bloody.

The 911 call picked up the voice of a man saying "I didn't do it," as his mother talked to the dispatcher.

"(Her blood) is all over my hands because I tried to give her CPR," Mitchell explained to the dispatcher. "I can't go back there. I can't see her again. I can't."

Ramsey County Attorney John Choi details in the petition for charges that the young couple was in the midst of a break up, with Anna moving back to Texas later that day.

Friends told investigators Anthony Mitchell was controlling and clingy, that he threatened to kill himself during an earlier breakup, had previously injured one of Anna's kittens and had been showing off a knife at a party the night before Anna was found stabbed to death.

"We see these situations a lot in the domestic abuse contexts where you where someone is wanting to break off the relationship in a substantial way," Choi said.

Now, back in Texas, Anna's mother and stepfather are struggling to understand it all.

"Supposedly she was going to get back with her ex-boyfriend down here," Benny Hutchings, Anna's stepfather said on the phone. "I don't know if Anthony was going through her text and found out, I don't know if she told him, ‘Hey, this isn't going to work, I'm going to be down here, you are going to be up here."

Now, they wish Minnesota had the death penalty they are accustomed to in Texas.

"I would definitely, definitely feel better if he was getting the death penalty," Hutchings said. "Even that would not make us feel better, but an eye for an eye you know."
