Nayembi (Lincoln Park Zoo)
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A 3-month-old baby gorilla is recovering after having emergency surgery for some pretty serious facial injuries.
The Lincoln Park Zoo gave an update on the gorilla's condition Friday afternoon.
Nayembi's recovering remarkably from the injuries she sustained on February 20 that required emergency surgery. Her injuries are healing and she is showing good signs of progress.
On Friday, Dr. Kathryn Gamble and Dr. Lester Fisher say Nayembi sustained bad bone and soft tissue injuries that required surgery. They don't know how she got hurt but the presumption is she got into a scuffle or fight with another gorilla.
"We're doing 24-hour care, and so we do have staff here 24 hours a day, spending time with Nayembi. She sleeps most of the day but has about four to five hours of playful bouts that happen periodically throughout the day just like all sorts of infants do and she is doing really well," Gamble said.
Nayembi will stay with the critical care unit until it is determined she can come back and be placed back with her family.
