Detroit Reading Corps reading rally - KMSP-TV

Detroit Reading Corps reports higher MEAP scores, but still a need to improve

Posted: Updated:

The Detroit Reading Corps is having a reading rally on Saturday March 2 to gain more volunteers and bring awareness to the need to help children with their reading. The rally is at Renaissance High School in Detroit from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. A training session will follow from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. At the rally volunteers can find out more information on the program and sign up to help children. The commitment is one hour a day, 30 minutes per child, one day a week, or every other week. The corps currently have more than 700 volunteers.

In 2010 Detroit's reading scores were the worst in the nation, but with the help of the Detroit Reading Corps and its volunteers, MEAP reading scores have increased. "We've been with the program since it started and to see how the kids develop over the years is just so rewarding," said Kimberly Lowell-Leverett, Community Relations, Compuware Corporation and volunteer.

Renaissance High School is located at 6565 W. Outer Drive in Detroit.
