Wayzata returned to the state tournament for the first time in nine years defeating defending state champion Benilde-St. Margaret's 5-2 Wednesday night at Mariucci Arena.
"I didn't think we were going to have a 14 out of 15 game win streak in the middle of the season, where we got bumped up to number one," said Wayzata head coach Pat O'Leary. "We scored some timely goals kind of took their breath away in the third period."
The Red Knights took one goal leads twice, but could not hold the lead as the young Trojans rallied back scoring four straight goals. Senior goalie Aaron Dingman played solid making 28 saves.
Edina 3 Burnsville 2
The Edina Hornets captured the section 2AA championship for the seventh straight year with a 3-2 win over the Burnsville Blaze.
"It's hard to do once, we've been fortunate to go there quite a bit," said head coach Curt Giles. "It's something different every year. It is so enjoyable to watch the kids get so excited for the opportunity to play in the Minnesota State High School hockey tournament. It's a big deal."
A pair of first period goals gave the Hornets the 2-1 lead and Cullen Munson's second period goal gave Edina the needed goal to advance to the state tournament.
