You can expect lane closures and delays this week on Interstate 494 as MnDOT crews get to work patching potholes.
Lanes will close overnight on both eastbound and westbound 494 between Interstate 35W and France Avenue.
Eastbound I-494 will be reduced to a single lane between 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, and 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 and again at 10 p.m. on Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday Feb. 28.
Westbound I-494 also will be reduced to a single lane at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26. All westbound lanes will re-open by 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, Minnesota Department of Transportation reports.
Additionally, the ramps to eastbound and westbound I-494 from France Avenue as well as the ramps at Penn Avenue and I-494 will be closed as construction crews continue to repair potholes. The ramps will re-open as soon as the potholes are patched.
Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation plan to do what they call "rolling pothole patching" to fix the problem areas, but they aren't suggesting any alternate routes since the roads won't be totally shut down.
"There will be trucks out in advance, there will be warning lights," said Kent Barnard. "Motorists should slow down and drive safely past our crews."
Barnard does suggest drivers check MnDOT's 511 website before hitting the road to see where the crews are -- and even avoid them if they wish.
"It will tell them generally where we're going to be working, and from that point, they can plan a different route," he said.
Most drivers can hit a pothole and continue on their way, but occasionally, low-profile tires result in a ruined commute. Damages can include a quick fix like a flat tire, or a more costly repair, like a broken lower ball joint.
Potholes repairs vary from city to city, but drivers can call 311 to report road condition issues.
