Teen Highway Deaths Up Nationally, Numbers Lower In Pa.

PHILADELPHIA -

New data released Tuesday by the Governors Highway Safety Administration shows the numbers of driver deaths among 16 and 17-year-olds in passenger vehicles increased nationally in 2012, but dropped in Pennsylvania.

According to the data, the number of driver deaths rose during the first six months of 2012 based on numbers from all 50 states. The study revealed that overall, the 16 and 17-year-old drivers deaths increased from 202 to 240 - marking a 19 percent jumps across the nation.

In Pennsylvania, the study found the numbers in teen fatalities dropped, with six total deaths for 16 and 17-year-old drivers during the first half of 2012. The study says that number is down from 10 deaths in 2011.

"This is good news for the Keystone state, and we hope the recent strengthening of Pennsylvania teen driving laws will continue the positive trend," Jenny M. Robinson of AAA said in a statement.

AAA says parents must continue to play a role to ensure their teens drive safety.
