Christie's Budget Proposal Could Be Affected By Federal Cuts

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, N.J. -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is hoping the budget he presents today isn't built on shifting sands.

Christie's fourth budget could be thrown into turmoil almost immediately if President Barack Obama and Congress fail to strike a deal on federal budget cuts set to take effect Friday.

The cuts threaten to reduce the $60-billion Superstorm Sandy relief package that Congress approved last month.

Obama says Congress can avoid those budget cuts if lawmakers compromise.

Speaking to the nation's governors at a White House meeting, the president said the impact of the cuts may not be felt immediately, but the uncertainty it has created is already having an effect on the economy.

Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, however, says he believes a deal can be reached.

Jindal says the president needs to stop trying to scare the American people.
