Woman's death on popular Maplewood trail rattles residents

Posted: Updated:

Maplewood police are asking the public to help them find a person of interest after a woman's body was found in a popular neighborhood park.

Michael McVeigh told FOX 9 News he had a gut feeling early Saturday morning when he heard a lot of commotion coming from behind his family's home.

"I remember the last thing I did was turn on the back light and looked out that way," he said. "I did not see anything."

McVeigh said he heard what sounded like people yelling at each other. Though he couldn't make out what was being said, he said it made his hair stand up.

"Kind of wanted to get out of here," he admitted. "Didn't feel safe."

By daylight, those mysterious noises made grim sense when Maplewood police confirmed they found a woman dead along one of the walking trails in Hillside Park.

Authorities have not released many details, saying only that the victim was from the immediate metro area and that she died of "homicidal violence."

A 911 call came in to dispatch at about 4:30 a.m. to report that a woman was in need of medical attention, but it is unclear who made the call.

Police had released a description of a person of interest in the case, but they now say he is not being sought. No additional information about his potential involvement was released.

"We encourage people to talk normal safety precautions," said Dave Kvam, with the Maplewood Police Department. "

Kvam he does not believe there's any need to panic, but neighbors like McVeigh are shaken.

"I almost feel guilty," he said. "Maybe there's something I could have done to help someone, but I don't know the situation."

Maplewood detectives were assisted by investigators from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as the scoured the park for evidence deep into the afternoon. The investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Maplewood police through the Ramsey county Emergency Communications Center at 651-767-0640.
