Matt Birk is retiring Friday after 15 NFL seasons, a source told the Baltimore Sun. Birk spent 11 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and his final four with the Super Bowl-champion Baltimore Ravens.
Birk, 36, had two years remaining on his contract.
The father of six and former NFL Man of the Year is scheduled to meet with students at a Baltimore elementary school Friday morning to dedicate a community reading center. The Ravens said Birk planned on "making another announcement" at the event.
"A guy like Ray Lewis, you send him off properly, press conferences, all that stuff," Birk told the Baltimore Sun ahead of the Super Bowl. "Guys like me, I just disappear, and then you're sitting around one day wondering, ‘Hey, whatever happened to that guy whose locker used to be over here?'"
A little more than two years ago, Matt Birk was named one of the 50 Greatest Vikings of all time.
