Beauty routines women develop when they are young may leave lasting signs of damage.
FOX 29's Joyce Evans talked to dermatologist Robin Levin to expose the beauty habits that are actually doing more harm than good.
Levin warned against unnecessary tension women put on their hair by wrapping it too tightly in a towel or keeping it in tight ponytails. The damage from this shows up years later, often showing up as a thinning around the hairline, something Levin calls "traction Alopecia."
Excessive perming, coloring and drying also do irreversible damage to hair.
Levin also advises women to be kinder to their skin. Exfoliating should be limited to once or twice per week. Over-doing it can cause break-outs and irritation. You should care for the skin beyond the face by cleansing, moisturizing and sun-protecting your neck and chest, as well.
Know what products you are using and if they work well together. Levin says layering conflicting products "could cause scarring."
