GARY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
The 23-year-old mother of four young children scored more than three times the legal limit for alcohol after she crashed a friend's car into a bridge abutment in Miller early Tuesday.
Only one of the four children — ranging in age from 4 months to 5 years — was properly restrained. One of the woman's 3-year-olds suffered a broken femur in the crash.
Pamela Hunter, a resident of Miller Village Apartments, was arrested at the hospital after police received a .25 percent blood alcohol content.
She was driving on Grand Boulevard at a railroad bridge near 3rd Avenue about 3:25 a.m. when she hit the bridge support beam, causing the car to catch on fire. A man who was also in the Chevrolet Impala removed the children, who have been placed in foster care.
The infant was in a child restraint seat, but the others, ages 5, 3 and 3 years old, were not, police said. The two 3-year-olds are not twins.
Hunter was being held while Detective Cpl. Shauna Poirier-Peter investigates the case.
Hunter does not have a valid license, police said.
