Oscar Pistorius gained international fame at the summer Olympics, but the South African sprinter known as the Blade Runner is now under arrest for murdering his girlfriend.
Pistorius is charged with shooting his girlfriend to death inside his home in Pretoria.
Some news reports say his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, may have been trying to surprise him for Valentine's Day and he thought she was an intruder, but authorizes say that report did not come from the police.
Police say they received a call early this morning from Pistorius' home, reporting a shooting at the residence. When officers arrived, they found paramedics trying to revive the woman who had been shot four times.
Steenkamp died at the home and officers said they found a 9mm pistol at the scene.
Pistorius made history at the London Olympics last year when he became the first double-amputee runner to compete on the track at the Olympics.
Police say there are no other suspects involved and the 26 year old is expected to appear in court later Thursday.
