It's all about love on Valentine's Day and as it turns out, love has a very good affect on you heart.
It's the holiday that surrounds us with romance and red hearts, but did you know Cupid's arrow brings a real benefit to your body?
"When people are in a happy, loving, stable relationship they live longer, studies have shown they live longer," said Dr. David Haines, with Beaumont Health System. "Studies have shown happily married patients have a greater longevity than people who aren't married."
Love is like a drug. It can jump start your immune system and keep the bulge at bay- couples who exercise together are more physically fit.
Plus, human touch has been proven to help reduce pain.
However, when things go south, so does your health.
A bad breakup, a death or extreme sadness can cause what's called "Broken Heart Syndrome." It feels like a heart attack and looks like a heart attack on the EKG, but there's no blockage.
"What we know from MRI data is the heart muscle swells up, it's a swollen heart," said Haines.
So on the day that celebrates hearts and love, remember along with your low cholesterol diet and jog on the treadmill, add a little romance to the recipe and your body will thank you.
