Researchers find drinking tea can help keep your brain sharp

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

There is now more evidence that drinking tea can help keep your brain sharp as you age.

UCLA researchers analyzed several studies on the effect of caffeinated drinks on memory and mental alertness.

Thousands of men and women logged how often they drank tea or coffee and then took a memory test used to diagnose the initial stages of Alzheimer's disease.

For up to a decade later, brain function stayed sharper in tea drinkers than non-tea drinkers and even coffee drinkers.

At least one study found drinking tea is especially beneficial for women.

The researchers say weaker results for coffee drinkers means it's unlikely that caffeine is responsible for this brain boost.  Instead they think it's a plant chemical found only in tea and mushrooms that offers this protection.

Best of all, you can get the benefits from just one to three cups of tea every day.
