Police: Gunman In Del. Courthouse Shooting Killed Himself

Posted: Updated:

Investigators with Delaware State Police say the gunman in Monday morning's New Castle County Courthouse shooting died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The results of an autopsy, conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, were revealed Tuesday afternoon. According to the autopsy, the gunman suffered two gunshot wounds; one in the upper body and a second, a self-inflicted gunshot wound, to the head.

Delaware State Police earlier Tuesday identified the gunman as 68-year-old Thomas S. Matusiewicz. Delaware State Police say Matusiewicz entered the courthouse with his son, 45-year-old David Matusiewicz Monday shortly before 8 a.m.

According to Delaware State Police, David Matusiewicz was scheduled to appear for a child support matter that involved his former wife, 39-year-old Christine Belford.

After David Matusiewicz proceeded through security, police say Belford and 47-year-old Laura Mulford entered the lobby area of the courthouse. Investigators say that's when Thomas Matusiewicz fired multiple rounds at close range, striking the two women.

Investigators say a gun battle erupted between Matusiewicz and Delaware Capitol Police Officers who were also in the lobby.

Bullets struck two of the officers in the upper body. Police say the bullet proof vests they were wearing protected them from the shots.

According to police, officers Michael Manley, 42, and Steven D. Rineheart, 50, were taken to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center for minor injuries.

Police say son David Matusiewicz was located at the courthouse and interviewed by detectives, where it was determined he was in violation of a federal probation violation.
