A 20-inch water main sent more than a million gallons of water gushing into the streets of downtown St. Paul on Saturday, affecting thousands of water customers along West 7th Avenue.

Officials with St. Paul Regional Water Services announced Sunday that the boil water advisory affecting customers in downtown, West 7th and lower west sides has been lifted.

"We are lifting the boil water advisory after receiving the results from our comprehensive sampling program, confirming that there are no bacteriological contaminants in the water distribution system," said Steve Schneider, general manager.

The Minnesota Department of Health was conducted and approved lifting the consumption advisory, which was issued as a precautionary measure after a water main broke on Saturday and flooded several streets.

"Customers can resume normal water usage," Schneider said. "The water distribution system's service and pressure have returned to normal."

The affected area was roughly bordered by Interstate 35-E to the west, Highway 52 to the east, University Avenue to the north, and the bluff line to the south.

Crews have since repaired the water main, which is expected to come back into use later on Sunday.
