Changing Roles: When The Woman Is The Breadwinner

Posted: Updated:

No longer are women the ones staying home while the men are the ones bringing in the dough. These days, women are not only working more but are also considered the breadwinners of the family.

For the Prince family, the trend is an all too familiar one.

Wife and mom Justina Prince works, while husband and father Maine Prince cooks and takes care of the household chores.

Their relationship, or at least the finances in their relationship, didn't always looks this way.

Married seven years, the couple has only experienced their new roles in the last few years.

For them, it works well. But for other couples, the new roles can be a challenge.

Relationship counselor Dr. Argie Allen says the problem begins when people have unrealistic expectations about what they desire in their relationships or in their marriage.

A recent survey conducted by Prudential Financial shows more than a quarter of married women questioned reported being the breadwinners of their families.

For Justina and Maine, they've found a way to make their new roles work in their relationship.

Dr. Allen recommends couples going through a similar experience look at every contribution as a valuable one.
