WASHINGTON -

Secretary of State John Kerry received a standing ovation from diplomats Monday as he started his first full day on the job.

The long time Massachusetts senator said it was a huge honor with heavy responsibilities.

"This is a remarkable place, and I'm here today to ask you on behalf of the country, I need your help. President Obama needs your help to help us to do everything we can to strengthen our nation and to carry those ideals out into the world," Kerry said.

Kerry represented Massachusetts in the senate for nearly 30 years before he was appointed and confirmed to Secretary of State. The former senator took over for Hillary Clinton.

His temporary replacement in the Senate, William Cowan, will serve until the state holds a special election in June.
