ATF investigates 'failed' Milwaukee sting under B. Todd Jones

MILWAUKEE (AP) -

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it plans to internally investigate a flawed sting operation in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel exposed a 10-month ATF storefront operation intended to bust felons for drug and gun offenses this week, but found it was marred by missteps.

The newspaper reported that the ATF operation was robbed of $35,000 in merchandise, an agent's machine gun was stolen and a document listing undercover agents was left behind. Several key members of Congress are demanding answers.

ATF spokeswoman Ginger Colbrun told the Journal Sentinel the agency is reviewing the operation.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin joined other congressional members from both parties is demanding accountability. In her letter to Acting ATF Director B. Todd Jones, Baldwin repeatedly admonished the ATF for a "failed operation" in Milwaukee.

The House committee that investigated the botched "Fast and Furious" operation plans to look into this one, called "Fearless Distributing," and see what Jones knew about it.

This is the latest in a string of controversies facing Jones' nomination to be the new head of the ATF.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
