Indoor seeding tips from Pike Nurseries

ATLANTA -

It's never too early to start indoor planting! Pike Nurseries' Melodie McDanal stopped by Good Day Atlanta on Friday with tips on how they can start their seeds indoors now.

How to Start Seeds

·    A Seed Starter Kit is the easiest way to get started since most include seed starter mix and a tray that turns into a mini greenhouse
·    It's important to use a seed starting mix since it is very light - this makes it easy for the seeds to start to germinate and the roots to grow

1.    Soak the seed starting mix in water and then squeeze as much water out as possible
Each seed has slightly different preferences

  • Look at the back of the seed packet to see how deep the seed needs to be planted
  • Typically, the larger the seed, the deeper it should be planted

2.    It's easiest to use a pencil to make a hole in the soil to plant your seed

3.    Plant one seed per cell or pot and cover with soil

  • If the seeds are very tiny, you can put a few seeds in one pot

4.    If you're planting different types of seeds, be sure to label your seeds so you can easily identify them later

5.    Gently water the newly planted seed. If you used a seed starter kit, be sure the lid is securely on so that it acts as a greenhouse

6.    Place your seeds in the sunniest place in your home that is also warm. If your windows are drafty, place your new seedlings a few feet from the window

7.    Once your seeds get their first set of true leaves, start fertilizing your seedlings

8.    You can plant your seedlings outdoors when the temperature in your home is about the same as the temperature outside or after the risk of frost has passed. This is usually at the end of March or early April

Super Sow Sunday event -- This Sunday from 10am-3pm all Pike Nurseries stores are celebrating #SuperSowSunday. You can come in and we'll help you get everything you need to start seeds
