The Talker: Sandy Hook survivors to sing at Super Bowl

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A moment of intense emotion will happen in the moments before the Super Bowl.
A children's choir from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut will be on the field to sing "America the Beautiful." 26 children will sing to honor the 26 children and teachers who were murdered.
The choir gained attention this month after recording "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with the folk singer Ingrid Michaelson. They became an online hit when the video was posted on YouTube and they were featured on Good Morning America.
The planned performance is not without its critics. Some say they're exploiting the kids and exploiting the tragedy. Some say it is political. Others say the whole topic is just too serious to be combined with a football telecast.
A counter-argument is that the Super Bowl is much more than a game -- it's a national event.
The NFL has embraced the people of Newtown before. Right after the shootings, all players wore stickers on their helmets reading "SHES" for Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Star running-back Chris Jonson wrote the victims' names on his game-cleats that he later auctioned off for charity.
The victim Jack Pinto was buried in a New York Giants Victor Cruz jersey. Cruz wrote "R.I.P. Jack Pinto" on his cleats. The Giants also hosted students and their families at a game, and Cruz went to Newtown to visit with Pinto's family -- a brief moment of joy amidst the pain.
A group of survivors from Sandy Hook were also invited to Houston. J.J Watt of the Texans gave them some on-field pointers before a game.
At the Super Bowl, Jennifer Hudson will sing with the children.
