ATLANTA -
Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis said there were metal detectors at the middle school where a teenager was shot on Thursday.
Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said that the suspect in the shooting was disarmed and apprehended by a school resource officer. That officer was an armed off-duty Atlanta Police officer, Turner said.
Investigators said that the shooting was not random, and they believe that there had been some sort of altercation between the two students involved, Turner said.
A police spokesperson told FOX 5's Justin Gray that the incident should be classified as a shooting at a school and not a school shooting.
Davis said that there are metal detectors at the school and that it was not known how the gun got past them.
Sandra Armour, who said that she was a cousin of child's mother, said that he doing fine and recovered. She said that she wanted to dispel any notion that this was a gang-related shooting and said he was a good kid.
Davis defended the school system's reaction to a shooting at Price Middle School on Thursday.
Some parents told FOX 5 that they were disappointed in the way they had been informed about the shooting and the time it had taken to get information.
Davis acknowledged a delay, but pointed out that it was an active crime scene and it took time to make the necessary precautions to safely release the students.
Davis said that he was not aware of a motive in shooting.
