Man pleads guilty in shooting of L.I. cop

Posted: Updated:

A New York man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the shooting of a Long Island police officer.

Michael Benitez made the surprise plea on Monday following opening statements in his trial.

A Nassau County judge indicated she will sentence Benitez to 25 years in prison on March 11.

Prosecutors say Hempstead village officers were chasing Benitez in December 2011 to question him about a robbery.

Benitez fired several shots at one of the officers, striking him in the arm and back.

The officer was saved by his bulletproof vest. He fired back, hitting Benitez in the hand.
