CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
The driver of a minivan that did not stop after it struck and killed a man and woman who were changing a tire on a vehicle in the South Side Ashburn neighborhood late Saturday was in police custody Sunday and charges were pending.
Authorities believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
About 10:45 p.m., the 39-year-old man and 34-year-old woman were changing a tire on a parked vehicle on the north side of the street in the 4000 block of West 87th Street, police said. A 1995 Nissan Quest heading westbound on 87th Street struck them and continued going down the street, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.
Witnesses to the accident helped police to locate the minivan and the female driver, a couple blocks away, Estrada said.
William Brunson, of the 8000 block of South Harper Avenue, and Victoria R. Means, of the 14000 block of South School Street in Riverdale, were dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The driver of the minivan remained in police custody Sunday afternoon and charges were pending.
