Two children that were in the back of a carjacked SUV have been found safe and sound in Newark, N.J., police said.

A carjacker forced a woman out of her Nissan Pathfinder on South 17th Street Thursday night, police said. The thief then drove off with the vehicle, which was carrying the woman's 3-year-old child and 11-month-old child.

An Essex County sheriff's officer on patrol found the SUV a short time later on South 19th Street with the children inside, police said.

Authorities reunited the children with their mother, and cops are working to identify the suspect.
