Around 30 children and two adults were taken to the hospital after an accident involving two school buses in Newton County on Tuesday.
The accident took place on Ga. Highway 162 near the Rock Plains Elementary School campus in Covington just after school let out. Eyewitnesses told FOX 5's George Franco that one bus was stopping to unload passengers when it was hit in the rear by the second bus.
The driver and one student were taken to Newton Medical Center. Other students and adults were taken by other vehicles to Newton Medical Center, Rockdale Medical Center and Gwinnett Medical Center.
Several students said the scene inside the buses was chaotic.
"They were crying and some of them with glasses, their glasses broke," said Joseph Skinner.
Like most of the students, Skinner suffered minor injuries. However, the bus driver, Gloria Inscore, suffered the worst injuries.
"She's just real sore. She may have a cracked rib. She's hurting in her lower back," said Angie Walden, a friend of Inscore.
Friends and family said Inscore told them from her hospital bed that she had concerns about the brakes on the bus.
The family of the bus driver says she was transferred to Atlanta Medical Center to recover from her injuries, which include a broken sternum.
A spokesperson for the Newton County School District says the accident investigation should provide more answers.
"We're just thankful that God was in control because it could have been a whole lot worse," said Alisa Pruett, the bus driver's daughter.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
