St. Paul police are looking for witnesses of a hit-and-run crash that left a 13-year-old boy unconscious at the intersection of University Avenue and Grotto Street on Monday.
Police found 13-year-old Brandon Smith lying on the curb with serious, but not life-threatening, head injuries. He was taken to Regions Hospital by paramedics, where he was diagnosed with a concussion.
The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday, when temperatures were measured at about five degrees below zero. Police said Smith was in the street for about 10 minutes, and that drivers probably swerved around his body.
A mirror and other car parts were found at the scene. Wednesday morning, St. Paul police said the mirror belongs to a 1992 Buick Park Avenue.
Smith's mother, Charlotte Igwe, spoke with FOX 9 News to issue a plea for someone to come forward.
"To not go back, to check and see -- that was very cowardly," she said. "That was a cowardly act, and I want that person to be apprehended."
Igwe said beyond the hemorrhaging concussion, her son's face is swollen and he had to get stitches inside his mouth.
"Somebody must have seen something," Igwe said. "If there's anybody out there that has seen or know of a car that's missing a mirror with the front end damaged, please call the police."
That request was echoed by investigators, who believe someone in the area may have witnessed the crash.
"We do ask that since there are bus stops there," said Sgt. Paul Paulos. "We are checking with MTC, we are checking with our CCTV."
