Analysis: FOX News snubbed by Obama at White House press conferences

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A University of Minnesota analysis found FOX News continues to get passed-over by President Obama at White House press conferences in favor of questions from ABC, CBS, NBC and the Associated Press.

FOX News ranks just ninth in the number of press conference questions fielded by the president in his first term, according to the analysis by Smart Politics of the university's Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

ABC reporters have been called on the most frequently during Obama's news conferences, followed by CBS, the Associated Press and NBC. FOX News comes in a distant ninth, at less than half the question rate of the Big 3 TV networks and less than 40 percent of press conferences overall.

But the president has also been a trail blazer with digital-only media, famously calling on the Huffington Post's Sam Stein during his first news conference in February 2009.

THE NUMBERS

- 36 solo news conferences by President Obama through Monday, Jan. 14.

- 29 questions from ABC reporters

- 28 questions from CBS

- 27 questions from Associated Press

- 26 questions from NBC

- 14 questions from FOX News

FOX News has been called on just once over the last six news conferences held since May 2012, when senior White House correspondent Ed Henry asked a question about the Benghazi fallout during Obama's Nov. 14 post-election press conference.

Added up, that shows President Obama has called on each of the Big 3 networks at approximately twice the rate as FOX News, although slightly more on fellow cable network CNN.

The Smart Politics analysis also shows the frequency with which FOX News is selected for questions by the president does not change with which correspondent they send to the White House.

Former FOX News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett (now with CBS) was called on in six of the 15 Obama news conferences during his tenure. Since Garrett's departure, Wendell Goler, Mike Emanuel, and Ed Henry have been called on during eight of 21 news conferences combined.
