NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -
Authorities say a teenager brutally stabbed a woman multiple times inside the Bed Bath & Beyond store in Middletown Thursday.
The 29-year-old woman, whose name was not released, is in critical condition. She was medivaced to Jersey Shore Medical Center after the attack.
Middletown police told Fox 5 News that it happened just before 5 p.m. at the store on Route 35.
Tyrik Haynes, 19, is being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on $1 million bail. He is charged with attempted murder.
According to the complaint signed against him, Haynes stabbed the victim 12 times, app.com reported.
Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told the Asbury Park Press that Haynes was previously accused of torching a cat to death on Christmas Eve in Middletown.
Amato told the newspaper that Haynes had adopted the cat from Petco, but that is not correct, according to a spokesperson for the company.
"Adoptions at our Middletown store are referred to our partner Furr Friends in Need. In this specific case, Furr Friends in Need conducted a verbal phone interview with this man but determined he did meet their qualifications for adoption," the spokesperson for Petco said in a statement. "He did not receive a cat from Furr Friends in Need or Petco. We take the health and well-being of animals very seriously as do our adoption partners."
