When the No. 9 Gophers men's basketball team hosts No. 5 Michigan, it will be the most highly anticipated regular season home game in years. Williams Arena is different than any other in college basketball. The elevated floor, the old school banners hanging from the rafters. Most importantly, from an atmosphere and vibe perspective, the barn is top notch when the team is good.
This team is very good and the energy will be unlike anything seen or heard since 1997.
The game is so big, legendary announcer Dick Vitale will be on the microphone as ESPN's top crew comes to Minnesota for what has become an important Big Ten game for both teams. Not since February 7, 1977 has Williams Arena hosted a conference game featuring two top ten teams. On that night Michigan entered ranked No. 5 and the Gophers were ranked No. 10.
Both teams are led by dynamic point guards. The Gophers Andre Hollins scored 21 points against Michigan in the Big Ten tournament that went to overtime His counterpart Trey Burke netted 30 for the Wolverines.
The Gophers have lost three straight to the Wolverines and will look to stop that streak tonight at 6 p.m.
