Jodie Foster calls for privacy in Golden Globe speech - KMSP-TV

Jodie Foster's speech at the Golden Globe Awards has people talking.

It brought some to tears, while others thought it was odd, and some couldn't decipher exactly what she meant.

Foster, who was accepting a lifetime achievement award, was a bit awkward and rambled on, but was also deeply personal, sensitive, and earnest.

Foster is gay and though she hasn't hid that from anyone who knows her, she hasn't said it publicly. Over the years, people with various motivations pressured her to publicly come out of the proverbial "closet."

As she called for privacy, Foster's speech made it clear that she thinks such pressure is wrong—even for a celebrity.

Foster railed against a pop culture she seems to feel will not allow privacy. Then, in the end of her speech -- more publicly than ever -- she talked about her family and love-life.

"I'm told that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life through a press conference, a fragrance, or prime time reality show and you guys might be surprised, but I am not Honey Boo Boo child," Foster said. "No, I'm sorry, that's just not me. If you had been a public figure from the time you were a toddler, if you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too would honor your privacy above all else."

There's been a lot of reaction. Some called the speech confrontational and disjointed. Some consider it hypocritical for a celebrity to demand privacy. Others called the speech "real," "beautiful," and "powerful"--the highlight of the night.
