Schumer calls for retailers to stop sales of assault weapons

Senator Charles Schumer held a press conference Sunday to call on the nation's largest gun retailers to suspend selling assault-style rifles until Congress has considered legislation to reduce gun violence.

Since the Sandy Hook massacre, sales of assault-style rifles have skyrocketed and are expected to increase during an upcoming "Gun Appreciation Day" organized by extreme pro-gun activists.

While gun safety legislation is debated in Congress, Senator Schumer is calling on Walmart and other major retailers to suspend sales of assault weapons.

Schumer says if Congress does pass measures to reduce the availability of assault weapons, those efforts could be undermined by the purchase of thousands of guns in the coming weeks.

"The bottom line is this: if we continue to see nearly  80,000 gun sales each month in states all over the country, it's going to be  counterproductive to whatever solution we will implement," said Schumer.

Senator Schumer said gun retailers need to think twice about selling assault weapons to people stocking up on weapons.
