CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Time Out Chicago's D.L. Hopkins has you covered on what to do this weekend.
Take advantage of the unseasonably warm temps. Head out to channel old Hollywood and sip a martini while watching the Golden Globe Awards at Cityscape's swank bar. Sample recipes or compete in a chili cook-off. Flee your cubicle for a midday concert. Cheer on bull riders as they try to stay atop 2,000-pound bucking beasts.
Friday
Pot o' Chili Cook-Off
Yes, we too are somewhat dubious about the Irish/chili connection in the Irish American Heritage Center's first Pot o' Chili Cook-off (what, lop the f off of and suddenly it's Irish?), but chili is chili so we're not going to complain. Teams will compete in the following categories: traditional beef, chicken, vegetarian and the intriguing "set your jeans on fire." The winning team gets its picture hung up at the center for a year. Irish American Heritage Center, 4626 N Knox Ave (773-282-7035, irish-american.org). 7–9pm; $20 for team entry.
Friday
Wired Fridays: Frankie Vega
Rejuvenate at the afternoon concert series. Dancing on a parquet floor to live electronic music from local DJs and bands could be the caffeine-free pick-me-up you need. Long-time DJ Frankie Vega mans the ones and twos. Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E Randolph St (312-744-6630, explorechicago.org).
Saturday and Sunday
PBR Presents: Chicago Invitational
You're getting warmer if you think this event involves can beer. One Ticketmaster reviewer admits the best moment was when an animal got loose. And you thought the "most dangerous eight seconds in sports" was only a threat to riders. The two-day Built Ford Tough Series concludes tomorrow. Allstate Arena, 6920 N Mannheim Rd (847-635-6601, allstatearena.com). Sat at 8pm and Sun at 2pm; $20.90–$137.40.
Sunday
Golden Globe viewing party
Patrons could give a hoot about nabbing a window seat tonight. Their eyes will be glued to the flat-screens. Savor the Nominee—a rum, peach schnapps and lime-juice mix—while watching the ladies run this mutha. Saturday Night Live alums Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the 70th Golden Globe Awards. Cityscape, 350 W Mart Center Dr (312-836-5000, martplaza.com/dining/cityscape). 7pm; free.
