WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A former west suburban high school counselor pleaded guilty Tuesday to having a sexual relationship with a student in 2010.

John Carbonaro, 35, of Warrenville, pleaded guilty to felony criminal sexual abuse before Judge Blanche Hill Fawell before the start of a bench trial Tuesday, according to a release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Carbonaro, a former counselor at Naperville North High School, had an "improper" relationship with a female student younger than 18 in the summer of 2010, prosecutors said.

He had inappropriate sexual conduct with the girl inside his home, the charges alleged. A third party contacted school officials, who notified authorities.

"As a trusted member of the high school's staff, Mr. Carbonaro used his position to sexually abuse his young victim," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "He cared nothing for his victim and betrayed the trust placed in him by the victim, the school and the victim's parents."

Carbonaro will be sentenced Feb. 19.
