Turkey tags along with Maplewood neighbors

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (KMSP) -

Some residents in the east metro have a house guest that isn't good at taking hints, but the inquisitive turkey has become something of a mascot in Maplewood.

When FOX 9 News went out to chase the turkey that has been going door-to-door for weeks, the tables turned when he started chasing Leah Beno.

Just as Vicki Lunz had promised, the turkey was ready to welcome the cameras. The tom she calls Jake has been paying her frequent visits since May.

"I looked out my second-story window and he was looking at me," she recalled. "A true peeping tom!"

Though she admits being a little freaked out at first, she slowly warmed up to him. In fact, he was the bird that stole the show on Thanksgiving.

Neighbors told FOX 9 News there used to be two turkeys, but the one that remains has nearly doubled in size.

"I don't feed him, but people obviously do," Lunz said.

As the weeks went by, Lunz said her feathered friend grew a lot more daring too.

"If I cut the grass, he follows me back and forth," she said. "Then, if I go sit on the deck, he'll come up right next to me and sit down."

He also chases cars, school buses and garbage trucks.

"Earlier today, he was chasing the mailman down the street," Lunz said.

In fact, he'll approach just about anyone who steps foot outside -- and that's left Lunz feeling a bit like a hostage in her house who is getting tired of cleaning up the mess he leaves behind. She's not the only one who is wondering whether the novelty of a neighborhood mascot might be wearing off either.

"There are a couple of neighbors thinking about relocating him because he is harassing the kids," she said.

Yet, not everyone is ready to say goodbye just yet -- especially not Jake.
