MSU-Mankato appoints Aaron Keen as interim head football coach

MANKATO, Minn. (KMSP) -

Starting on Wednesday, Aaron Keen will become the interim head football coach at Minnesota State University, Mankato -- but the school is conducting a nationwide search to find a permanent candidate.

Athletic Director Kevin Buisman made the announcement on Monday, stating that Keen will finish the current school year leading the team.

"I am confident of Coach Keen's ability to direct our program and look forward to his continued leadership in this role," said Buisman, who indicated he would have no further comment on this appointment.

Keen was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year and American Football Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year. His compensation for the remainder of this year will be $50,554.55, which is pro-rated from a salary equating to $101,109 annually.

Keen recently completed his second season with the program, and had served as an offensive coordinator during the past two seasons. He has been acting as head coach for the team since former head football coach Todd Hoffner was placed on leave amid a child pornography investigation.

The case against Hoffner was dismissed by a Blue Earth County judge who found there was a lack of probable cause. Hoffner remains on the university's payroll.

In 2012, the Mavericks had their best season in school history, finishing 13-1 and hosting three NCAA playoff games. They were undefeated in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and captured the 2012 league title.
